Our Assessment: The Savage 99 is one of the most iconic American lever-action rifles, and the 99G variant adds a fast-handling, lightweight configuration that was tailor-made for the woods hunter. Chambered in .300 Savage, it offered ballistics that were ahead of its time—approaching .30-06 performance in a shorter case—making it a favorite for deer and black bear across the country. This 1926 example shows honest field wear but retains about 80% of its original finish, a bright bore with sharp rifling, and solid mechanics. The addition of a tang-mounted Lyman aperture sight enhances its usability and accuracy, complementing its practical carbine length and handy balance.
For the collector, this rifle represents a desirable early 20th-century carbine variant of the Savage 99, with fine walnut furniture and period features intact. For the shooter, its smooth lever action, tight lock-up, and effective chambering mean it remains ready for the field nearly a century after it left the factory. Combining classic Savage ingenuity, practical hunting utility, and C&R eligibility, this 99G is equally at home in a collection rack or in the deer woods, a testament to why the Model 99 is so revered among lever-action enthusiasts.
