Our Assessment: The Winchester Model 70 XTR Sporter is a refined expression of Winchester’s venerable Model 70 lineage—built for serious hunting with a focus on accuracy, durability, and classic sporter lines. Chambered in .300 H&H Magnum (only manufactured from 1989-1992 in this chambering), with a 24″ barrel, this late-1980s XTR Sporter combines the long-range, heavy-game capability of a magnum cartridge with the Model 70’s traditional ergonomics: capped semi-pistol grip, fluted Monte Carlo comb and a sporter contour barrel that points naturally for quick, deliberate shots at extended ranges.
This example presents very well for its age, retaining about 98% of the original blued finish and showing only light operational wear and a few small pressure dents in the wood. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and rates 9.5/10 in this writer’s opinion, with only minor fouling noted; bolt jeweling remains vivid and the markings and screw heads present cleanly. Mechanically the action functions correctly, the tang safety operates as intended, and the trigger breaks crisp and clean on our bench check. The rifle is set up with two-piece Leupold-style bases ready for optics, making it immediately serviceable for field use.
For hunters and collectors this Winchester is an attractive proposition: its near-complete finish retention and excellent bore make it a reliable, accurate magnum hunting rifle straight from the safe, while the correct period appointments and strong cosmetics give it collector appeal among late-20th century Winchester examples. Whether you intend to hunt big game with a classic magnum or add a high-quality Model 70 to a focused collection, this XTR Sporter offers a strong balance of presentation and practical performance.
