Stock Configuration & Condition: The wood stock has a traditional Semi-pistol grip, metal nose caps, two sling loops, stacking ring, and a checkered metal butt plate with storage compartment. The LOP measures 13” inches from the front of the trigger to the back of the butt plate. The wood on this rifle shows moderate to heavy marks, lines and compressions from use and age. There are several chips missing from the edges of the wood but all of them have been covered over with finish. There are no visible cracks. The metal butt plate has lost its finish and most of the checkering and shows many scratches and marks especially around the edges. Overall the furniture on this rifle is in about Good condition.
Type of Finish: Parkerized
Finish Originality: Refinished
Bore Condition: The bore is gray and the rifling is well defined. There is visible erosion and pitting throughout the bore. The CMP grading card shows a muzzle of 0+ and a throat of 1. Our gauges show a muzzle reading of about 3+ and a throat erosion reading of about 4. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 5.5/10.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains 98% of its metal finish. The clip latch and barrel show the majority of the finish loss. The friction surfaces of the bolt and receiver show almost no rub wear. The markings are clear and the screw heads are sharp. Overall this rifle is in Very Good condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This rifle includes the CMP grading card, Certificate of authenticity, manual, en bloc clip, and yellow chamber flag.
Our Assessment: This Springfield M1 Garand produced in November 1944 is fitted with an SA 11-44 barrel and retains a semi-rare lock bar style rear sight, a desirable component phased out later in the war. The stock is marked with an Ordnance wheel and “S.A. G.A.W.,” denoting manufacture at Springfield Armory under Col. George A. Woody’s command between August 1943 and August 1944. This rifle was released as a CMP service grade in 2021 and has been refinished, preserving functionality and external appearance. Its component mix reflects correct late-war Springfield features and desirable inspection marks tied to wartime production.
The M1 Garand was the standard U.S. service rifle of World War II, praised for its reliability and firepower. Gen. George S. Patton famously called it “the greatest battle implement ever devised,” underscoring its reputation among soldiers. With its semi-automatic, en-bloc clip system, the Garand gave U.S. forces a significant advantage over bolt-action-equipped adversaries. This 1944 production example sits firmly in the period of peak wartime output, representing both the practical function and historic legacy of Springfield’s contribution to the American war effort.
