Bore Condition: The bore is bright, and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion in the bore. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 10/10.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 97% of its original metal finish. The balance of the finish shows light storage wear, with some minor corrosion and pitting at the bottom of the receiver. There is also one small ding in the finish on the left bottom edge of the receiver. Otherwise, the finish is deep and dark throughout. The markings are clear and legible. The screw heads are sharp. Overall, this rifle rates in Fine to Excellent condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly, as does the lever safety, and the half-cock safety. We did not fire this rifle, but we did perform a mechanic’s check. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This rifle comes with its original serial number matching box, owner’s manual/paperwork, and factory rear sight as mentioned above.
Our Assessment: The Winchester Model 94 is one of America’s most iconic sporting actions — John Browning’s 1894 design that helped define lever-gun hunting culture — and the Trapper carbine is the handy, short-barrel expression of that tradition, built for quick handling in woods and brush. The chambering, .30-30 Winchester, debuted in the 1890s as one of the first small-bore smokeless-powder cartridges for sporting rifles and remains a trusted deer cartridge for moderate-range hunting because of its manageable recoil, proven terminal performance and widespread ammo availability.
The key points here are practical and immediate- the short 16? barrel makes the rifle extremely easy to carry and swing in tight cover, the bore is bright with sharp rifling, and the rifle includes its original serial-matching box, owner’s paperwork and the factory rear sight — a nice provenance package that increases both use and resale value. The walnut stock is tight with sharp checkering and the rifle retains about 97% of its finish, presenting strongly for a 1980 example.
Some cosmetic notes include- Overall the metal and wood are deep and well preserved; the only condition items are light storage wear, minor corrosion/pitting at the bottom of the receiver and a small ding on the left bottom edge of the receiver. These are surface issues that affect appearance more than function and are disclosed for buyer expectations. Mechanically the lever cycles and locks up correctly, the lever and half-cock safeties operate as intended, and the trigger breaks crisp and clean on our bench check.
This Model 94 Trapper Carbine is an ideal do-it-all brush carbine for a woods hunter who wants immediate handling and a classic cartridge, while the boxed paperwork makes it attractive to collectors of late-20th-century Winchester examples.
