The left of the receiver is factory drilled and tapped with a Williams receiver sight installed, adjustable for windage and elevation.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are two-piece checkered deluxe walnut with schnable forend, straight grip, straight comb and smooth steel buttplate. The stocks have a few light nicks and scuffs, most notable on the left of the forend at the front edge and the front of the checkering. The checkering is well defined. There are no chips or cracks. The LOP measures 13 1/4″ from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The plate has no notable wear. Overall, the stocks are in about Fine condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is mostly bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion in the bore, but there is a little stubborn fouling toward the muzzle-end. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 9+/10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 99% of its metal finish. The metal has no notable wear or damage, only light handling marks. The screw heads are sharp and the markings are clear. This rifle rates in Fine-Excellent overall condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We have not fired this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None.

Our Assessment: The 1895 Winchester was the first model to incorporate a non-detachable box magazine. Teddy Roosevelt called this model, chambered in .405 WCF, his “Medicine Gun for Lions” (from his book “African Game Trails”). The M1895 rifle became the preference of major powers worldwide, with Russia alone purchasing nearly 300,000 1895’s just before World War I. The Model 1895 was designed for the new generation of cartridges utilizing smokeless powder and spitzer bullets, and many of its original chamberings remain popular today. With its quick handling characteristics, box magazine and pointed bullet capability, the Model 1895 changed the world of sporting rifles forever. Teddy Roosevelt was famous for his charge up San Juan Hill during the Spanish-American War (he was awarded a Medal of Honor for his heroism in 2001), his tenure as President and his conservation beliefs in founding the National Forest Service and starting five National Parks, 150 National Forests and various game preserves.

This Model 1895 rifle, chambered in .405 Win., commemorates the 150th Anniversary of his birth, from 1858 to 2008. This is the High Grade model with a Grade II/III checkered walnut stocks, french gray finished receiver, blued barrel and gold-plated trigger, with engraving on the receiver and magazine, his signature on the barrel and a gold-plated medallion in the stock. The lever flats are decorated with gold bust and full-length portraits of Roosevelt. This rifle is really gorgeous, so please see our pictures. There were only 1,000 High Grade models made. The rifle is in Fine-Excellent condition with a bright, sharp bore that shows telltale signs of having been fired outside the factory. The stocks have minor wear and the original rear sight was removed with a Williams receiver sight installed in the factory mounting holes. This will make a beautiful addition to any collection of lever action rifles. Please see our photos and good luck!

Please forgive any typos, I was educated in California. -Bud
