Overall, this rifle rates in about Excellent condition.

Our Assessment: The Remington Model 40XBBR is a purpose-built precision platform that pairs a heavy 26” stainless barrel with a single-shot bolt action and a beautifully figured benchrest-style hardwood stock — the sort of rifle that was clearly assembled with accuracy as the primary goal. Chambered in .222 Remington and fitted with a polished stainless heavy barrel, jeweled bolt, and drilled/tapped receiver with two-piece male dovetails, this rifle is set up to accept quality optics and deliver consistent, small-group performance. The fluted comb, beavertail forend and the excellent linear grain of the stock speak to a rifle built for stable contact and repeatable cheek weld; the 13-1/8” LOP with supple factory rubber butt pad will suit many shooters out of the box.
Cosmetically and mechanically this example is impressive — retaining roughly 98% of its metal finish, a bright bore with sharp rifling (9/10), smooth action, and crisp screw heads — all indicators of careful ownership and light use. Most notable is the exceptionally light trigger, breaking at 5.6 ounces, which is a serious asset for precision shooting and small-bore work but also elevates the need for caution. The tang-mounted safety has been removed (the stock has a cutout but the safety is absent), and there is some wear where the bolt and chamber interact; because the safety is missing and the trigger is extremely light, we recommend a qualified gunsmith inspect the action, confirm safe timing and locking, and either reinstall a proper safety or install an appropriate safety device before regular use.
For the benchrest or varmint shooter seeking a turnkey, precision-capable rifle, this Remington 40XBBR is an excellent starting point: near-mint finish, a first-rate barrel, and a truly outstanding trigger make it immediately attractive for accuracy-minded shooters. For the collector, the rifle’s original finishes, quality stock work, and overall condition are appealing, though the absent safety and light trigger may affect desirability until addressed. With a competent gunsmith’s sign-off and a proper optic mounted to the drilled and dovetailed receiver, this example is primed to deliver the sort of accuracy its configuration promises.
