Our Assessment: This SIG P220 chambered in .38 Super Auto and built in West Germany in 1988 is a scarce variation of the classic pistol. It retains the original European-style heel magazine release, a feature more common on earlier models before the transition to the American-style push button. The .38 Super chambering itself was unusual for SIG, as most P220s of the period were produced in .45 ACP or 9mm, making this example a rare and collectible configuration.
The P220 was first developed in the 1970s as a service pistol and became the foundation for SIG’s modern handgun lineup. By 1988, West German production was known for exceptional machining and quality control, and models from this era are especially sought after. A .38 Super P220 combines that craftsmanship with a caliber prized for competition as a flat shooting high velocity cartridge, giving this pistol an uncommon blend of performance and historical rarity.
