Our Assessment: The Colt AR-15 SP1, introduced in 1964, was the first civilian version of the AR-15 platform. These rifles represented the commercial version of Eugene Stoner’s revolutionary design, mirroring the M16 rifles then in service with the U.S. military but configured for semi-automatic fire only.
As a pre-ban Colt SP1, it holds high collector value due to its historical significance and role in introducing the AR-15 to the civilian market. With its early features and C&R eligibility, this rifle appeals equally to AR collectors, Colt enthusiasts, and shooters who want to own a true piece of American firearms history. Be sure to check our detailed pictures for a better understanding of the firearm. -C.R.
