Our Assessment: The Remington R-15 VTR series marked the company’s foray into adapting the AR-15 platform for dedicated hunting applications. Introduced in 2008, it was produced during a period when the popularity of predator hunting was surging in the U.S., and AR-style rifles were being embraced by sportsmen as lightweight, accurate, and customizable tools. Finished in Advantage Max-1 camo for concealment in open terrain, the rifle was configured with features tuned specifically for the hunter rather than the tactical shooter.

This example is chambered in .204 Ruger, a cartridge developed jointly by Ruger and Hornady in 2004. Designed for blistering velocity and a flat trajectory, the .204 Ruger quickly became a favorite among varmint and predator hunters for its ability to deliver pinpoint accuracy with minimal recoil. Out of the R-15’s 22” fluted barrel, shooters can expect muzzle velocities north of 4,000 feet per second with light bullets—making it a devastatingly effective round for coyotes, prairie dogs, and other small-to-medium game at extended ranges. The fluted barrel helps reduce weight while aiding in cooling during prolonged shooting sessions, a feature especially valuable in varmint fields.

With its tube-style free-float handguard, A2 furniture, and crisp trigger, this rifle offers both utility and classic AR ergonomics. Mechanically sound and retaining about 98% of its original camo finish, it shows only minor handling marks consistent with light use. For the collector or hunter, it represents a fascinating crossover firearm—one of the first mainstream manufacturer efforts to market the AR-15 directly to sportsmen. Chambered in .204 Ruger, it is both practical for the field and noteworthy as a piece of hunting and firearms history. Please check out our high quality photos, and good luck on your bids! – J.D.
