The wood shows scattered compressions, shallow scratches, and light finish wear throughout, consistent with honest field use. There are no chips, but there is a crack at the very bottom of the stock where it meets the buttplate. There is a grain fracture on the left side of the buttstock in the middle, just forward of the buttplate. The LOP measures 13.75” from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. Overall, the furniture rates in Good condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright with some streaking. There is no erosion in the bore. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 8.5 out of 10.

Overall Condition: This firearm retains about 40% of its original metal finish. Much of the finish has turned to patina. The balance of finish shows moderate wear, showing some scattered scuffs and scratches throughout. The pin heads are unmarred. The screw heads are lightly tooled with turnable slots. The markings are clear and complete. Overall, this firearm rates in about Good condition.

Mechanics: The action and safety functions correctly. We did not fire this firearm. We have cleaned this firearm and performed a mechanic’s check but expect many will want to clean the firearm again depending on their standards.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None

Our Assessment: Introduced in 1933, the Winchester Model 42 is often called “the baby Model 12” due to its scaled-down design, but it quickly became legendary in its own right. It was the first pump shotgun ever built exclusively for the .410 bore, earning a reputation for quality, balance, and performance that far exceeded its small size.

This 1948 example features a 28” barrel choked Modified, making it a versatile field gun for upland birds, small game, and even clay targets. Its C&R status, original finish, and honest wear reflect decades of careful use without abuse, leaving a bright bore and solid mechanics intact.

For collectors of Winchester shotguns, the Model 42 is a must-have—production ended in 1963, and these guns have become increasingly sought after. For shooters, it remains one of the most enjoyable .410 pumps ever made, offering both collectible value and practical field use.
