Our Assessment: When Browning contracted Miroku of Japan to reintroduce classic Winchester designs in the 1970s and ’80s, the results were some of the finest factory reproductions ever made. Among them was the legendary Model 1895, the last lever-action rifle designed by John Browning for Winchester. Famous as the rifle carried by Theodore Roosevelt on his African safari and adopted in large numbers by Imperial Russia during World War I, the 1895 represented a shift from tubular magazines to a fixed box magazine that could safely chamber pointed spitzer bullets.
This example, manufactured in 1985, is chambered in the classic .30-40 Krag—the first smokeless military cartridge adopted by the United States and a historically appropriate offering for this rifle. The 24” barrel, deep bluing, and smooth walnut stocks with schnabel forend give it the elegant, period-correct look that Browning’s Miroku reproductions are renowned for. The condition is outstanding, with nearly all its original finish intact, crisp markings, and only the faintest handling marks. The bore remains pristine, ensuring accuracy as well as collectability.
Adding to its appeal, this rifle comes with its original serial-matching box and a leather cartridge sleeve, making it an excellent complete package for both collectors and enthusiasts. For those drawn to the romance of Roosevelt’s “big stick” and the transitional era between frontier lever guns and early 20th-century bolt-actions, the Browning/Miroku 1895 is one of the most faithful ways to experience that history. This Grade I reproduction offers modern precision with old-world design and remains one of the most desirable commemorative lever actions produced in the 20th century.
