Our Assessment:  The Winchester Model 1895 is one of the most iconic lever-action rifles of the early 20th century, designed by John M. Browning to handle modern high-pressure smokeless powder cartridges. Unlike earlier Winchester lever guns, the 1895 employed a fixed box magazine rather than a tubular one, allowing it to chamber pointed spitzer bullets like the .30-06 Springfield. This innovation ensured the Model 1895 a long service life with hunters, frontiersmen, and even militaries worldwide.

This example, manufactured in 1924, is chambered in the highly versatile and powerful .30-06 Springfield. It features a 24-inch barrel fitted with a Lyman brass beaded blade front sight and a Lyman adjustable aperture peep sight mounted to the receiver, with the barrel’s rear sight dovetail neatly plugged. The walnut stock set, with its schnabel forend and crescent buttplate, displays honest use with scattered scratches and dings but no cracks or structural issues. The bore remains bright with sharp rifling and earns a perfect 10/10, a strong testament to its preservation. Metal finish shows about 75% original coverage, with thinning and areas of patina on the receiver, consistent with a rifle that has seen field use but been well cared for.

For collectors, a Winchester 1895 in .30-06 represents one of the most historically significant configurations, bridging Browning’s legendary lever-action design with America’s most enduring military cartridge. For shooters, it remains a powerful and practical hunting rifle with a unique blend of heritage and utility. This rifle offers an opportunity to own a fine example of Winchester’s last great lever-action innovation—a firearm equally at home in a collection or in the field.
