Our Assessment: The Barrett Fieldcraft was introduced as a departure from Barrett’s reputation for heavy long-range rifles, offering instead an ultra-lightweight hunting rifle built with the same precision and quality. Designed for backcountry hunters who demand a rifle that can be carried all day without fatigue, the Fieldcraft is hand-laid with a carbon fiber stock, a lightweight stainless steel action, and a match-grade barrel. At around 5 pounds, it is one of the lightest bolt-action rifles available while still delivering the accuracy expected from Barrett. The Barrett Fieldcraft is based off of Melvin Forbes of New Ultra Light Arms’ (NULA) design.
This example is chambered in 6.5 Creedmoor, a cartridge well-known for its outstanding balance of recoil, velocity, and long-range precision—making it equally suited for deer hunting in thick country or stretching shots on open ground. The 22” barrel with a 1:8 twist provides excellent performance with modern high-BC hunting bullets. The rifle is in excellent condition, with about 98% of its finish intact, only minor operational marks, and a bore that is bright and sharp, rating 9.5/10. The carbon fiber stock is clean and solid, and the trigger is set very light with an exceptionally crisp break.
For hunters seeking an accurate, durable, and exceptionally lightweight rifle for serious backcountry use, the Barrett Fieldcraft is among the finest modern offerings. Now discontinued, these rifles are becoming harder to find, making this an excellent opportunity for both the practical hunter and the discerning rifle collector.
