Our Assessment: This International Harvester M1 Garand made circa 1954 is a post–Korean War production rifle, built when the government contracted IHC to help meet demand for the U.S. military. Unlike Springfield or Winchester, IHC lacked in-house experience building firearms and partnered with subcontractors for key parts. One of the most important was Line Material Corporation (LMR) of Birmingham, Alabama, which produced some of the highest-quality Garand barrels of the era. LMR barrels are especially well-regarded by shooters for their exceptional accuracy and consistency, making them a prized feature on IHC rifles.

This particular example has been modified into a National Match–style rifle with a unitized forend and bedded action to increase accuracy, as well as a hooded National Match rear sight. These upgrades mirror the modifications made to military rifles for competitive shooting at Camp Perry and other matches. While not a factory National Match, the presence of IHC receiver and LMR barrel combined with precision modifications results in a rifle that blends collectible features with enhanced performance. For collectors, IHC Garands remain desirable due to their lower production numbers, and the LMR barrel further elevates the rifle’s reputation for quality.
