Our Assessment: This engraved Mariette percussion pepperbox is a quintessential example of early 19th-century European personal defense arms. Designed by Jean Mariette of Liège, Belgium, these pistols were widely carried in Europe and exported to America, favored for their multiple-shot capacity in an age when single-shot pistols dominated. The damascus barrel cluster and foliate engraving on this pistol speak to its higher quality, placing it above the plain utilitarian examples. The pepperbox design, fired by rotating barrels rather than a separate cylinder, bridged the gap between the flintlock era and the rise of Colt’s revolvers. Collectors of percussion handguns and early repeating designs will appreciate this piece for its historical importance and Continental craftsmanship. Antique firearms like this are increasingly scarce in honest condition, especially with damascus barrels and engraving intact. This is a fine addition for any collection focusing on percussion arms, Belgian gunmaking, or the evolution of repeating handguns. Please see our photos and good luck on your bid! – L.S.
