Stock Configuration & Condition: The grips are smooth rosewood “Coke Bottle” target stocks without extractor relief cuts, dating to the early 1950s. These early grips are highly desirable for their shape, rarity, and fit to N-frame revolvers of the era. They show light handling marks with excellent grain and finish, and no chips or cracks. Overall, the grips rate in Excellent condition.

Type of Finish: High Polish Blue with Case Colored Hammer & Trigger

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bore is bright with sharp rifling. There is no visible erosion. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 9/10.

Overall Condition: This revolver retains about 97% of its metal finish. The finish is deep and lustrous, with only light handling marks and a faint turn line. The screw heads are sharp, and all markings are clear. The checkering on the topstrap and rib is crisp. While it has been fired, it is clear this revolver has been exceptionally well cared for. Overall, this revolver rates in Excellent condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly and smoothly. This revolver features the rare U-shaped mainspring, which serves the dual role of both mainspring and trigger return spring. This design was typically found on the Model of 1955, and Smith & Wesson briefly experimented with a “W”-shaped spring (endorsed by Elmer Keith) before reverting to the standard flat mainspring due to breakage concerns. The U-spring configuration was produced in very limited numbers, making surviving examples highly collectible and capable of commanding a premium. The cylinder locks up with minimal play on each chamber and the timing is correct. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: Included is a factory mahogany presentation case with blue lining, a bore mop, bore brush, cleaning rod, and knurled-handled screwdriver. The case shows light handling wear and minor finish loss on the hardware, but rates in Fine condition overall.

Our Assessment:
This Smith & Wesson .357 Magnum, produced in 1956–1957, just before the introduction of model numbering, is a stellar example of the pre-Model 27. With its 6 1/2″ barrel, five-screw frame, high-polish blue finish, and case colored hammer and trigger, it is a showcase of the craftsmanship S&W was famous for in this golden era.

What truly sets this revolver apart are its rare and desirable features. The U-shaped mainspring not only serves as the hammer spring but also doubles as the trigger return spring — a fascinating and short-lived engineering choice. Typically associated with the Model of 1955, this design was soon abandoned due to durability concerns, but today it stands as a rarity prized by serious collectors. Paired with this is another premium feature: a set of early smooth rosewood “Coke Bottle” target stocks without extractor relief cuts, dating to the early 1950s. These grips, known for their ergonomic shape and scarcity, are a sought-after upgrade in their own right.

Cased with its original factory tools, matching serial numbers throughout, a bright 9/10 bore, and minimal signs of use, this revolver offers both historical significance and exceptional collector appeal. For those chasing the investment-grade Smiths from the pre-27 era — especially examples with rare transitional parts — this one belongs at the top of the list. So bid high and bid firm. I encourage you to look at the condition of the item in our high-quality photos. Good luck with your bid. -K.F.
