Sights / Optics: The front sight is a hooded bead on a textured ramp. The rear sight is a Lyman peep sight with adjustable elevation and windage. The original rear sight has been removed and the dovetail slot is filled with a protector. The receiver has been drilled, tapped, and filled.

Grip/Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is two piece checkered wood. There are moderate handling marks present with some dings and scratches throughout. There is a small crack just behind where the top of the receiver meets the stock. The butt plate fits the stock with no movement. The stock rates in about Good condition. 

Type of Finish: Blued

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion in the bore. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 9 out of 10. 

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 95% of its original metal finish. The balance of finish shows light wear with typical finish loss from handling and storage throughout the years. The most notable blemish is a spot of wear through the bluing just ahead of the receiver. The screw heads are lightly tooled with turnable slots. The markings are clear and complete. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good condition. 

Mechanics: The action and safety function correctly. We did not fire this rifle. We have cleaned this firearm and performed a mechanic’s check but expect many will want to clean the firearm again depending on their standards.

Our Assessment: The Winchester Model 54 was the company’s first successful civilian bolt-action rifle, laying the groundwork for the legendary Model 70. Offered in various chamberings, the .22 Hornet variant is among the most desirable for collectors due to its early introduction of centerfire small game and varmint cartridges to the sporting market.
