Our Assessment: The Springfield Armory M1A is the civilian-legal counterpart to the M14, offering the same proven gas-operated, rotating bolt action and 7.62 NATO/.308 Winchester chambering that served U.S. forces through the late 1950s and into the Vietnam War. This 1987-manufactured example hails from an era when Springfield was still incorporating a high percentage of U.S.G.I. parts—something highly prized among collectors and enthusiasts for both authenticity and durability. It features a 22” barrel topped with a National Match front sight and a military aperture rear, delivering the same sight picture competitive shooters and service rifle marksmen appreciate. The walnut stock, with its “P” proof and faint defense acceptance stamp, reflects the rifle’s military heritage while housing the solid composite handguard that resists heat warping.

This rifle remains in Excellent condition, showing about 95% of its parkerized finish with honest wear on high edges and metal-on-metal contact points. The stock has been refinished, giving it a smooth, clean presentation while still showing a few handling marks and compressions consistent with use. The bore is bright with strong rifling, rating 8/10, and the action cycles properly. It comes complete with three 20-round magazines (two gray, one black), a canvas sling in Excellent condition, and an M6 bayonet with sheath—adding both functional and collectible value. For anyone looking for an early-production M1A with desirable G.I. features, solid mechanics, and a package of quality accessories, this is a standout rifle that bridges the gap between service legacy and civilian marksmanship.
