Our Assessment: This Winchester Model 1892 takedown rifle, manufactured in 1910 and chambered in .25-20 WCF, is a fine example of one of John Browning’s most elegant and mechanically efficient lever-action designs. The takedown configuration offered hunters and outdoorsmen a rifle that could be easily broken down for transport, making it a favored companion in the field and on the trail. The .25-20 cartridge, while mild in recoil, was well-suited for small game and varmint hunting, and remains appreciated today by collectors and handloaders for its historical charm and accuracy potential. The 24” octagon barrel and crescent buttplate give this rifle the traditional look and handling that Winchester lever guns are famous for.

This example retains about 65% of its original finish, with honest wear from more than a century of service and handling. The stock shows scattered marks and a forend crack, while the bore, though showing some erosion, still has defined rifling. Mechanically, the rifle remains sound, and the takedown feature functions properly. For collectors of pre-64 Winchesters, those seeking an early 20th-century field rifle with character, or anyone who appreciates the craftsmanship of a Browning-designed lever action, this Model 1892 offers both historical significance and continued usability.
