Markings: The top flat of the barrel is marked “REMINGTON ARMS CO. ILION, N.Y.” The bottom of the barrel is marked “32-20”..  The bottom tang is marked “21190”.  

Barrel Length: 24 Inches, Octagonal. 

Sights / Optics:  The front sight is a beaded blade dovetailed to the barrel. The rear sight is a semi-buckhorn V-notch sight on an elevator ramp dovetailed to the barrel. It appears that there was a new dovetail milled into the front of the barrel to move the front sight back.   

Stock Configuration & Condition/ Grip:  The stocks are two-piece smooth walnut with schnabel tipped forend, straight grip, straight comb, crescent buttplate. There are heavy handling marks present, with deep scratches, pressure dents, scuffs, and drag marks throughout the stocks, most notably on the belly of the buttstock. There are no chips or cracks in the forend or buttstock. The LOP is 13 1/4 inches from the trigger to the rear end of the buttplate. Overall, the stocks rate at about Fair condition.

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition:  The bore is mostly bright with sharp rifling. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 9/10.  

Overall Condition:  This rifle retains about 20% of its original finish. The balance of the finish shows heavy wear with thinning finish on the barrel, and fading case color on the receiver from handling and storage. The top tang retains most of its case color, due to a tang mounted sight having been covering it in the past. The rest of the case color on the receiver, trigger guard, and bottom tang has faded away. The hammer appears to be a replacement hammer, as it retains most of its bluing. The screw heads show signs of tooling, but still retain serviceable slots. The pins are mostly unmarred. The markings are clear and legible. Overall, this rifle rates in about Fair condition. 

Mechanics: The action functions correctly, and the trigger has a crisp break. We have not fired this rifle, but we did perform a mechanic’s check. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: The Remington No. 2 Rolling Block was one of the most successful light sporting rifles of its era. Built for black powder cartridges, the No. 2 was offered in a wide range of calibers, including the .32-20 WCF seen here—a centerfire cartridge popular for small game and varmint hunting. Unlike the beefier No. 1 Rolling Block, the No. 2 featured a more compact frame, making it ideal for younger shooters, homesteaders, and trappers. These rifles were renowned for their simplicity, strength, and reliability.

This example, while showing significant age and wear, is still a remarkable survivor from the late 19th or early 20th century. It retains its original character, with worn but stable walnut stocks and a functional action. Collectors of early American single-shots, black powder sporting arms, or Remington history will appreciate this rifle as a tangible link to the transitional period from muzzleloading to metallic cartridges. Whether as a restoration candidate, display piece, or black powder plinker, this is a piece of frontier-era firearm history worth preserving.
