Our Assessment: First introduced in 1964, the Model 58 is a double-action revolver built on the square butt N service frame. Unlike the Model 57, it has a non-shrouded extractor rod. The serial number of this pistol puts it in the first year of production. Total production was just over 20,000, with many of the model 58’s sold to police departments in San Francisco, Texas, and New York.
The N framed Model 58 followed on the enduring legacy of the K frame service revolvers also referred to as M&P. Durable carbon steel construction and straightforward operation made M&P revolvers a favored choice among law enforcement agencies. Over the years, they became the go-to sidearm for countless officers on the beat and saw action in military conflicts worldwide. Its reputation for accuracy and durability made them an indispensable tool for officers, providing them with a sense of security and confidence in the line of duty. Additionally, their service extended to military personnel, where it earned the trust of soldiers in various theaters of conflict.
The .41 Magnum cartridge was intended to provide a larger round than the .357 Magnum without the over penetration and recoil of a .44 Magnum. While it never gained wide popularity in the police community, it has gained a following among handgun hunters.
