LSB#: LSB250520JB058

Make: Smith & Wesson

Model: .44 Double Action Frontier

Serial Number: 13076

Year of Manufacture: All frames were produced prior to 1899, making this revolver an antique.

Caliber: .44-40 Winchester (.44 WCF)

Action Type: Top-Break Double Action Revolver with a Six-Round Fluted Cylinder

Markings: The top of the barrel rib is marked with a two-line S&W address. This configuration predates the change to a one-line marking in 1900. The serial number “13076” is found on the butt of the grip frame, rear face of the cylinder, and barrel latch. The barrel and latch appear original to the frame.

Barrel Length: 4″

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a half-round blade fixed to the barrel rib. The rear sight is a “V”-notch integral to the barrel latch.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The grips are smooth mother-of-pearl or abalone panels. Each panel shows a small chip loss at the toe but remains well-fitted. There are no major cracks or looseness. These grips display iridescent character and contribute to the revolver’s period presentation. Overall, they are in Very Good condition.

Type of Finish: Blued

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bore shows strong rifling with heavy, stubborn fouling throughout. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 7/10.

Overall Condition: This revolver retains approximately 65% of its original finish. The cylinder and barrel have largely toned to a smooth gray patina, with scattered plum coloration and thinning along high edges. Light oxidation is present on various surfaces, primarily around the barrel and frame junctions. There is honest wear from use and age, but no signs of abuse or major corrosion. The screw heads are serviceable with some marring. The markings are clear. Overall, this revolver rates in about Very Good condition as an antique.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly in both single and double action. The top-break mechanism locks up securely. The cylinder indexes properly with light play. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None

Our Assessment:
Smith & Wesson’s .44 Double Action Frontier was introduced to satisfy demand for a revolver chambered in Winchester’s .44-40 WCF cartridge—an important logistical advantage for frontier settlers, ranchers, and lawmen already armed with lever-action rifles. Built on the robust “New Model No. 3” style frame, this revolver retained the elegance and smooth operation of Smith & Wesson’s early top-breaks while offering compatibility with the dominant rifle caliber of the West. With all frames known to have been manufactured before 1899 and the two-line barrel address confirming early production, this revolver qualifies as an antique and is exempt from federal firearms licensing.

The example offered here shows strong character and considerable original finish, along with desirable pearl or abalone grips that add unmistakable frontier flair. Mechanically sound and visually compelling, it’s a quintessential revolver of its era. These .44 D.A. Frontiers are rarely encountered in any condition—particularly with matching numbers and antique eligibility—and would enhance any serious Smith & Wesson or Old West collection. So bid high and bid firm. I encourage you to look at the condition of the item in our high-quality photos. Good luck with your bid. -K.F.
