Markings: The right side of the barrel is marked “Browning Model 1885 CALIBER .223 REM/5.56MM ONLY”.  The left side of the barrel is marked “ BROWNING ARMS COMPANY MORGAN, UTAH & MONTREAL P.Q. / MADE IN JAPAN   NP”. The right side of the receiver is marked with the serial number. The scope is marked “LEUPOLD VARI-X III 3.5-10X40mm”.  

Barrel Length: 23”  Tapered Octagonal 

Sights / Optics: There is no provision for iron sights.  It has a Leopold STD mount attached holding a Leupold Vari-X 3 scope with a simple duplex reticle. The sight picture is very clear, the ¼ MOA turrets adjust with a positive click. The scope has a few nicks in the finish. Overall the scope is in Very Fine condition.    

Stock Configuration & Condition: The furniture is a two-piece checkered walnut with schnabel forend, pistol grip, fluted straight comb, and a Browning rubber buttpad with two sling studs. The checkering is sharp. The forend has a few small scratches. The stock shows some faint surface lines. There are no chips or cracks. The LOP measures 13 ¼ ” from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The buttpad has some minor wear. Overall, the stocks are in Excellent condition.

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bore is bright with sharp rifling. There is no erosion in the bore.  In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 9/10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 99% of its metal finish. The lever shows some faint lines, the receiver has a notable scratch on the right side, the barrel has several nicks.  The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle is in Excellent condition.  

Mechanics:  The action works correctly.  The trigger breaks crisply and the lever locks-up solidly. We have not fired this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.
