Our Assessment: The Browning BAR is a semi-automatic rifle produced by Browning Arms Company, renowned for its classic design, reliability, and accuracy. It was introduced in 1967 as “a lightweight automatic sporter built the Browning way.” The literature of 1967 described the Grade II as coming “with a stock and forearm of a richer grade French walnut, finished to a glowing hand-rubbed surface of lasting beauty. The highly polished deeply blued Grade II receiver has a big game animal head with decorative scroll background hand-engraved on each side.”
One of the key attractions of the BAR is its classic design and timeless appeal, reminiscent of the iconic Browning firearms of the past. The rifle’s walnut stock, blued steel receiver, and polished finish contribute to its aesthetic appeal, while its ergonomic design and comfortable grip ensure a satisfying shooting experience.
While production of the Browning BAR gave way to the BAR Type II in 1976, it remains highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts for its historical significance and exceptional craftsmanship. Well-maintained examples of the BAR continue to be cherished by shooters for their reliability, accuracy, and classic styling, ensuring its place as a timeless firearm in the Browning lineup. -C.B.
