Our Assessment: This 1960 Winchester Model 70 Target rifle chambered in .220 Swift is a remarkable example of precision engineering from the golden era of American bolt-action rifles. Built on the legendary pre-64 Model 70 action, this rifle features a 26″ medium-heavy barrel and was designed specifically for high-velocity, long-range accuracy. The .220 Swift remains one of the fastest commercial cartridges ever made, renowned for its blistering speed, flat trajectory, and devastating terminal performance on varmints and predators.
This example is in Fine overall condition, retaining approximately 93% of its original blued finish with thinning at the edges and some finish loss on the barrel. The bright bore, sharp rifling, and absence of erosion all suggest it’s been well cared for and has plenty of life left. The checkered walnut stock shows minimal handling wear and no structural issues, with a crisp trigger and clean internal magazine. It’s fitted with a high-quality Weaver 6.5–20×44 scope, a perfect match for the Swift’s long-range potential. The rifle is also drilled and tapped for receiver and barrel-mounted sight options, offering flexibility for competition or field use.
Pre-64 Model 70 Target rifles are relatively scarce—especially in .220 Swift—and increasingly sought after by both collectors and shooters. Whether you’re looking to extend your collection of classic Winchester bolt guns or want a capable and historically significant varmint rifle, this Model 70 Target offers outstanding accuracy, pre-64 craftsmanship, and enduring appeal.
