Our Assessment: This Remington M1917 Enfield, originally manufactured in August 1918, has been expertly sporterized into a powerful and elegant big-game rifle chambered in the formidable .375 H&H Magnum. The M1917 action, one of the strongest military bolt actions ever fielded, has long been favored for conversion into dangerous game rifles due to its robust receiver, controlled-feed bolt, and large ring design. This example exemplifies that legacy, blending military history with sporting utility in a rifle well-suited for everything from elk and moose to African plains game. The addition of a Stith 2¾x scope and modern checkered walnut stock with a cheekpiece transforms this century-old warhorse into a capable and accurate sporting rifle. The overall condition of this rifle is impressive, with about 97% of its blued finish remaining and only minor handling wear and plum toning visible in spots. The bore is in excellent shape, bright with sharp rifling and no erosion—ideal for a cartridge like the .375 H&H, where precision and reliability are paramount. The checkered walnut stock is well-executed, offering a strong combination of form and function, with a cheekpiece for scoped shooting and a solid rubber buttpad to tame recoil. While the original military sights are gone, the vintage Stith scope is in very good condition and provides a period-correct optic well-matched to the rifle’s capabilities.

This sporterized M1917 would be an outstanding choice for a serious hunter in search of a rugged and accurate rifle chambered in a proven magnum cartridge. It also holds strong appeal for collectors who appreciate high-quality postwar sporter conversions that respect the platform’s origins while adapting it for modern use. Whether as a ready-to-hunt big bore rifle or a standout example of a classic custom sporting conversion, this Remington M1917 in .375 H&H offers both performance and legacy in equal measure. -R.E.
