Our Assessment: This FN Herstal Model 1950 is a refined bolt-action sporting rifle built on the legendary Mauser 98 action—a platform known worldwide for its strength, reliability, and smooth cycling. Originally manufactured in Belgium in the post-WWII era, this rifle has been rebarreled in .270 Winchester and fitted with upgraded American-style furniture and a modern optic, blending old-world craftsmanship with contemporary field performance. The barrel is marked “J.T.L.”, indicating a custom or gunsmith-fitted barrel, likely installed during the rifle’s sporterization.

Chambered in the flat-shooting .270 Winchester, this rifle is ideal for medium- to large-game hunting, offering excellent range and energy without punishing recoil. It is topped with a high-quality Vortex 4–16×44 scope with a Dead-Hold BDC reticle—perfect for dialing in longer shots and making precise adjustments in the field. The bore is pristine, the Mauser action is tight and smooth, and the overall metal finish remains strong with about 97% retained after a professional refinish.

The upgraded stock is checkered walnut with rosewood accents, a Monte Carlo comb, and a ventilated Pachmayr buttpad. It’s a comfortable, aesthetically pleasing, and practical setup, complemented by a leather sling for carry. This rifle is C&R eligible, making it appealing not only to hunters but also to collectors of postwar European sporting arms and Mauser-based builds.

Whether you’re looking for a capable and classy hunting rifle or a well-executed custom sporting Mauser, this FN Model 1950 in .270 Win is ready for the hunt, the range, or a prominent place in your collection. Please see our photos and good luck on your bid! – L.S.
