Our Assessment: Darne shotguns represent some of the most unique and refined mechanical designs in the world of side-by-side sporting arms. The R15 model was among their top-tier offerings, with exquisite French engineering and distinct sliding breech action. Unlike conventional break-action doubles, the entire breechblock slides rearward to expose the chambers, creating an exceptionally sleek and low-profile action that is both mechanically fascinating and aesthetically elegant.
This example, chambered in the desirable 28 Gauge and built in the early 1960s, is a lightweight and fast-handling upland gun. The fine engraving, tight fitment, and elegant lines speak to Darne’s attention to detail and high craftsmanship. Its chokes and barrel length are ideal for quail or woodcock, making this not just a collector’s piece but also a truly functional field gun.
French-made sliding breech doubles are seldom seen on the American market, particularly in sub-gauge configurations. This R15 would be a centerpiece in any collection of European sporting arms or a cherished companion in the field for the discerning bird hunter.
