Action Type: Bolt Action Rifle with Internal Hinged Floorplate Magazine

Barrel Length: 24″

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a Lyman beaded blade dovetailed to a hooded, textured, ramped base fixed to the front of the barrel. The is a dovetail in a boss at the rear of the barrel, currently filled with a blank. The chamber ring is drilled and tapped for an optic mount (none present), the bridge is not drilled. The left-rear of the receiver is drilled and tapped for a receiver sight (none present).

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is one-piece checkered walnut with pistol grip, straight comb, checkered steel buttplate and sling swivels front and rear. The stock has been relieved for a receiver sight and there is finish in the cut. There are some scattered nicks, scuffs and scratches. There is a crack in the top of the wrist extending from the back of the receiver back below the comb on the right. The checkering is well defined. The LOP measures approximately 13 5/8″ to the back of the buttplate. The plate has strong finish with some minor erosion under the finish and well defined checkering apart from a small patch of smoothed checkers in the center. Overall, the stock is in Good-plus condition as refinished.

Type of Finish: Blue

Finish Originality: Refinished, the bolt is serial-matched to the receiver.

Bore Condition: The bore is light gray with sharp rifling. There is light erosion scattered through the bore. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 6-7 out of 10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 96% of its current metal finish. The finish is gnerally strong with a few scattered light marks. There is some minor erosion under the finish on the bolt knob. The action shows light operational wear. The screw heads range from sharp to tool marked with strong slots. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle is in Very Good condition as refinished.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. There is a safety mounted on the top-rear of the bolt. Pulled to the rear, the safety is OFF. Pushed forward all the way, it locks both the bolt and the trigger. If pulled back half-way, it blocks only the trigger. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None.

Our Assessment: This is a vintage pre-1964 Winchester Model 70 rifle chambered in .30-06 and made in 1942. The .30-06 served the American military well for the first half of the 20th century and also became one of the most popular sporting cartridges in the nation. This rifle has been refinished, so it looks great for its age. The rifle still has a decent bore and strong mechanics. It is only equipped with a front sight, but does have provision for mounting a standard rear sight, an optic, or receiver sight if you choose. As a wartime production rifle, this will likely see interest from Winchester collectors. It should also still make for a good deer rifle for at least another lifetime. Please see our photos and good luck!
