Overall Condition: This revolver retains about 99% of its metal finish. The finish is deep and glossy throughout with only faint evidence of careful handling. There is a light turn line on the cylinder and a few minute marks on the sharp edges, but nothing that detracts from its appearance. The screw heads are sharp, the markings are clear, and the case color on the hammer and trigger is strong. This revolver rates in about Excellent condition overall.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The double- and single-action trigger pulls are smooth, the cylinder locks up with minimal play, and the timing is spot-on. The hammer has a checkered spur and the trigger is smooth-faced. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: Included is the original Bangor Punta blue two-piece box with matching end label. The box is correctly marked with the serial number, model 520, and specification codes. Also included is the original S&W wax paper, a Smith & Wesson factory letter dated July 20, 1993 describing the Model 520’s production history, and a December 1997 Handguns magazine article referencing the model’s limited release.
Our Assessment: The Smith & Wesson Model 520 is one of the rarest and most collectible N-frame revolvers ever made. Originally developed at the request of the New York State Police in 1979, this model was designed as a heavy-duty fixed-sight service revolver chambered in .357 Magnum. When the NYSP decided to go with the adjustable-sight Model 28 instead, Smith & Wesson completed the run of 3,000 units and sold them commercially in 1980. These revolvers were never cataloged, making them a limited production item right from the start.
This example, serial number N560382, is in exceptional condition with 99% of its original finish remaining, sharp stocks, and a matching factory box. The included factory letter and period literature provide excellent provenance and confirm the significance of this model. Mechanically sound and beautifully preserved, this is exactly the kind of revolver advanced S&W collectors look for—scarce, correct, and complete.
The Model 520 offers a perfect combination of function, rarity, and law enforcement heritage. For collectors seeking a centerpiece N-frame with limited production and a fascinating backstory, this revolver checks every box. So bid high and bid firm. I highly recommend that you review the item’s condition using our high-quality photos. Good luck with your bid. -K.F.
