Sights/Optics: The front sight is a beaded blade dovetailed into a textured, ramped base screwed to the barrel. The base is grooved for a hood, but none is present. The rear sight is a folding “U”-notch dovetailed and screw-set into a base fixed to the barrel; the notch is fine-adjustable for elevation and can be adjusted for windage in the base. The top of the receiver is drilled and tapped with a set of two-piece Leupold quick-detach bases and 1″ rings installed.
Stock Configuration and Condition: The stock is one-piece checkered walnut with two through-bolts, capped pistol grip, monte-carlo comb with cheek-piece, an orange rubber Winchester buttpad and a sling plate in the belly (the other mount is fixed to the bottom of the barrel in front of the forend). The stock has no notable wear or damage, only light handling marks. The checkering is well defined. There are no chips or cracks. The LOP measures 13 1/2″ from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttpad. The pad minor wear and remains supple. Overall, the stock is in Excellent condition.
Type of Finish: Blued
Finish Originality: Original, the bolt is serial-matching.
Bore Condition: The bore is mostly bright with sharp rifling. There is no erosion, but there is some stubborn copper fouling. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 9 out of 10.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 97% of its metal finish. The action shows light operational wear. There are a few light marks on the bolt handle. Otherwise, there are only light handling marks. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle rates in Fine-Excellent condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. There is a safety mounted on the rear of the bolt. Pulled to the rear, the safety is ON, locking both the bolt and the trigger. If pulled back half-way, only the trigger is blocked. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.
Box, Paperwork, and Accessories: This rifle comes with the installed bases and rings.
Our Assessment: Hemingway said of firearms, “The rifle and the pistol are still the equalizer when one man is more of a man than another,” Holding this Model 70 in hand, it’s hard to deny the logic. The Winchester Model 70 is an iconic American sporting rifle which has been a staple of hunters—and even writers such as Hemingway—for more than 80 years. This example is a Classic Super Express with a blued finish, 24” barrel, and checkered monte-carlo comb stock. This example has limited and responsible use as there is evidence of some light stubborn fouling in the bore, but as far as the exterior goes, this rifle is nearly minty fresh. This Model 70 is handsome, with a blued barrel that is inky-black, and a stock that is near-immaculate. Good luck and happy bidding!
