Stock Configuration & Condition: The wood stock has a semi-pistol grip, metal nose caps, stacking loop, double sling loops, and a metal buttplate with hinged door for storage. The LOP measures 13” from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The wood shows scattered lines, compressions, and small chips. There is a notable scratch on the left side by the front sling ring. There are no visible cracks. The metal buttplate shows scuff marks around the edges. The plate retains most of its finish, the checkering is mostly sharp and the door spring is sharp. Overall the stock set is in Very Good condition.
Type of Finish: Parkerized
Finish Originality: Original.
Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is well defined. There is some very light pitting / lines from use scattered throughout the grooves of the bore. Our gauges show a muzzle of 2 and a throat erosion of 3+. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 8.75/10.
Overall Condition: The rifle retains 99% of its metal finish. The finish has turned green brown with oil and age. The friction surfaces of the bolt and the receiver show some very minor rub wear. The action is smooth, the markings are clear. Overall this rifle is in about Very Good to Very Good+ condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We have not fired this rifle. As with all previously owned firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This rifle includes a leather sling, the original DCM sales sheet, and the original shipping box.
Our Assessment: This Winchester M1 Garand, originally manufactured in 1942, is a wartime-production rifle from one of the rarest of the major M1 manufacturers. Winchester Repeating Arms was one of only two private companies contracted to produce the Garand during World War II, and their rifles are particularly sought after due to lower production numbers and distinct manufacturing features. This example is fitted with a Springfield Armory barrel dated 1943, likely swapped in during its postwar service life, and displays an electro-penciled marking on the receiver leg indicating it was rebuilt in January of 1965, at Springfield armory during routine maintenance or long-term storage rotation.
The rifle was later sold by the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) as a Service Grade rifle, indicating it met military standards for function and bore condition while showing typical signs of use. The Garand itself was the first standard-issue semi-automatic rifle adopted by a major military power, and it gave U.S. forces a significant advantage in rate of fire during WWII and the Korean War. General George S. Patton famously declared it “the greatest battle implement ever devised,” a sentiment echoed by many who relied on it in combat. This Winchester variant, marked by both its early-war heritage and Cold War-era rebuild, offers a unique blend of collectibility, character, and historical significance.
