The handguard wood on this rifle appears to have been replaced and as a result shows virtually no wear. The stock shows lines and compressions with small chips scattered throughout. The stock shows no visible cracks. The metal buttplate has been refinished. The buttplate shows only minor handling wear. Overall the wood is in Very Good condition.

Type of Finish: Parkerized

Finish Originality: Refinished.

Bore Condition: The bore is very bright with sharp rifling. There is no visible erosion or pitting. Our gauges show a muzzle of 0 and a throat of 1. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 9.5/10. This is outstanding for a 1954 barrel.

Overall Condition: The rifle retains about 97% of its metal finish. The receiver is refinished. There is some minor finish loss on the cylinder lock, the trigger guard, and on the friction surfaces of the bolt and receiver. The barrel and the receiver show some minor scattered handling marks. The markings are mostly clear and the screw heads are sharp. Overall this rifle is in Very Good+ condition.

Mechanics:  The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This rifle includes an Uncle Mike’s leather sling.

Our Assessment: This Springfield Armory M1 Garand, manufactured in April of 1945, was among the final production runs during World War II. By that time, Springfield had refined the manufacturing process, producing battle-ready rifles in large quantities. This example was later re-barreled sometime after December 1954, likely during an arsenal rebuild or military maintenance cycle. The refinished receiver, along with a barrel exhibiting a muzzle reading of 0 and a throat erosion of 1, suggests it was either carefully preserved or expertly restored, making it an excellent shooter or collector-grade rifle.

The M1 Garand was the standard U.S. service rifle from 1936 to 1958 and saw extensive use in World War II and Korea. It was the first semi-automatic rifle issued in large numbers to infantry, offering a significant firepower advantage over bolt-action counterparts. General George S. Patton famously praised it, calling it “the greatest battle implement ever devised.” With its 8-round en-bloc clip and rugged gas-operated system, the M1 earned a legendary reputation for reliability and battlefield dominance. This particular rifle, combining late-war production heritage with Cold War-era improvements, embodies that legacy.
