Our Assessment: The FN Browning Auto-5, or A5, stands as one of the most revolutionary shotguns in history. Designed by John Moses Browning in 1898 and patented in 1900, it was the first mass-produced semi-automatic shotgun. This example, bearing an early serial number under 3000, was made by Fabrique Nationale in Belgium under Browning’s supervision before Browning production moved stateside to Remington and later back to FN after 1952. This places it firmly within the earliest era of Auto-5 production.
Its long recoil operation was a novel and ingenious mechanism, enabling rapid fire and automatic cycling at a time when pump and break-action shotguns dominated the market. This model features the classic round knob pistol grip and early FN markings, with Belgian proofs and Browning’s patent declaration, all signs of early production intended for export under Browning’s control.
Collectors and Browning enthusiasts will find great appeal in this shotgun, not only for its pedigree and heritage but for its usability and durability. It stands as a testament to the genius of Browning’s design, which endured virtually unchanged for decades. Whether for a Browning collection or a historically significant shooting arm, this early FN A5 offers both substance and story. Please see our high quality photos and good luck on your bid! – M.C.
