Sights/Optics: The front sight is a blade dovetailed to a hooded, checkered ramped base that is fixed to the barrel. The top of the receiver has integral Sako-pattern bases with rings holding a Kahles 2.3-7x scope with tapered crosshair reticle. There is some scattered oxidation on the body, the image has a distinct yellow hue, and the glass needs a good cleaning. The original adjustable aperture rear sight is included, stored in a vintage Kahles scope box.
Stock Configuration and Condition: The stock is one-piece checkered walnut with capped pistol grip, monte carlo comb with cheekpiece, ventilated brown rubber Sako recoil pad and sling swivels front and rear. The stock has scattered light nicks, scuffs and scratches. The checkering is well defined. There are no chips or cracks. The LOP measures 13 3/4″ from the front of the trigger to the back of the recoil pad. The pad has moderate wear and cracking, but remains fairly supple. Overall, the stock is in Very Good condition.
Type of Finish: Blue
Finish Originality: Original, the bolt is serial-matching.
Bore Condition: The bore is semi-bright and the rifling is sharp. There is scattered light erosion and stubborn fouling in the bore. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates about 7 out of 10.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 97% of its metal finish. The finish is generally strong with a few light marks and handling wear on the bolt knob. The action shows light operational wear. The screw heads range from sharp to lightly tool marked with strong slots. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle is in Very Good-plus condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all previously owned firearms, thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.
Box, Paperwork, and Accessories: This rifle comes with the installed scope, a vintage Kahles scope box, the original rear sight, and a brown leather sling.
Our Assessment: The Finnbear L61R, was in production from 1962 to 1979 when it was re-designated the AV. Sako Finnbear rifles are hefty, known for their fit, finish, and accuracy. They have also held their value very well. The Finnbear is a beautiful hunting rifle that can be passed down from generation to generation. This example was produced ca. 1965 and is chambered for the venerable .30-06 cartridge, one of the most popular hunting cartridges in America. This rifle is in Very Good-plus condition, appearing to have seen some use in the field, also suitable for the Sako collector. Please see our photos and good luck!
