The stock shows some scattered minor lines, compressions, and nicks. The pistol grip appears to have been repaired and has a minor wobble to it but it feels solid. There is also a repair in the wood next to the front sling ring and the front two rivets have been replaced. The hinged buttplate functions correctly and shows some minor surface oxidation. The rubber buttpad is still semi pliable. Overall the stock is in Good condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no visible pitting or erosion in the bore. The feed ramps are smooth and shiny. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 9.5/10.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 97% of its finish. The surface of the rifle shows scattered minor marks and handling wear with no real notable marks. The friction surfaces of the bolt and receiver show the majority of the finish loss. The markings are clear and the screw heads are sharp. Overall this rifle is in about Very Good condition.

Our Assessment: This M1A rifle is an early production (October 1980) Springfield Armory M1A from Geneseo, Illinois, fitted into an M14E2 (also known as M14A1) stock setup. Early Geneseo M1As, particularly those built in the late 1970s and early 1980s, are highly regarded for their build quality, with many parts either surplus U.S. military or extremely close reproductions. Chambered in 7.62 NATO (.308 Win) with a 22-inch barrel, traditional flash suppressor, and standard military-style iron sights, this M1A remains faithful to the original military M14 configuration while maintaining semi-automatic function for civilian ownership. The rifle retains the traditional M14 aesthetics and shooting characteristics but gains a lot of unique character from its rare furniture.
The M14E2 stock is a rare and desirable configuration. Originally designed to tame the recoil of the full-auto M14 during sustained fire, the E2 stock includes a robust wood pistol grip, a forward-mounted folding foregrip, and a flip-up hinged buttplate, all features intended to help soldiers control the rifle during automatic fire. This example, while semi-automatic, still has the telltale selector cut in the stock, an authentic reminder of its full-auto heritage. The clamp-on bipod further enhances stability, completing the classic heavy rifle setup that saw use with automatic riflemen in Vietnam and later Cold War service. Altogether this M1A blends Springfield’s early craftsmanship with the rare and functional history of the M14E2 system, making it not only a striking shooter but also a piece of living history.
