Our Assessment: The Dan Wesson Model 7445 IHMSA in .445 SuperMag is a purpose built, powerhouse revolver designed for extreme long range handgun shooting. This particular model features a 9.5-inch heavy barrel with a vented rib and slotted shroud, designed to manage the substantial heat and recoil generated by the powerful .445 SuperMag cartridge. The stainless steel finish adds durability and corrosion resistance, while Hogue rubberized grips provide essential recoil absorption and improved control, critical for a revolver that pushes the upper limits of traditional handgun performance. Built on Dan Wesson’s modular frame system, the 7445 allows for interchangeable barrels and precise barrel-cylinder gap adjustments, enhancing both accuracy and customization potential.

The “IHMSA” marking stands for the International Handgun Metallic Silhouette Association, a competitive shooting organization dedicated to long-range handgun silhouette shooting, knocking down steel targets shaped like animals at distances out to 200 meters. The 7445 IHMSA model was specifically tuned for this sport, where flat trajectory and bone-crushing power are paramount. The .445 SuperMag cartridge itself was invented by Elgin T. Gates, a pioneering figure in both handgun hunting and metallic silhouette shooting. Gates developed the SuperMag family of cartridges to push the performance of revolvers beyond the capabilities of traditional magnum rounds. The .445 SuperMag is essentially a lengthened .44 Magnum, offering significantly more powder capacity and energy, making it ideal for silhouette shooting, big game hunting, and those who simply appreciate top-tier revolver performance.
