Our Assessment: This Winchester M1 Garand, manufactured in July of 1942, is a classic example of the iconic American battle rifle that served with distinction in World War II. Sold by the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) in 2017 as a Service Grade rifle, it features a muzzle reading of 2 and throat erosion of 2, indicating good bore condition for its age. The rifle is in “correct” for Service Grade condition meaning parts are serviceable but not necessarily original to each other, it is outfitted with a CMP replacement walnut stock, offering fresh durability while preserving the rifle’s battlefield heritage.

The M1 Garand, designed by John C. Garand and officially adopted by the U.S. military in 1936, was the first standard-issue semi-automatic rifle used by any nation’s infantry. Firing the powerful .30-06 Springfield cartridge and fed from an 8 round en-bloc clip, it provided American troops with a significant advantage in rate of fire over the bolt-action rifles used by enemy forces. General George S. Patton famously called it “the greatest battle implement ever devised,” a testament to its effectiveness in combat. Winchester was one of only two commercial firms contracted to produce M1s during the war, and their rifles are highly regarded by collectors and shooters alike.
