Stock Configuration & Condition: The wood stock has a semi-pistol grip, metal nose caps, stacking loop, double sling loops, and a metal buttplate with hinged door for storage. The LOP measures 13” from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The refinished buttplate shows some pitting underneath the refinish. The stock and rear upper handguard show only minor marks and normal handling wear. The forward handguard shows minor lines and some compressions and a more aged finish. The stock and rear handguard were either replaced or refinished at some point. There are no visible cracks or chips. Overall the stocks are in Very Good+ to Excellent condition.

Type of Finish: Parkerized

Finish Originality: Refinished

Bore Condition: The bore is mostly bright and the rifling is well defined. There is some very light erosion present throughout with some minor pitting on the lands. Our gauges show a muzzle of 1.5 and a throat erosion of 2.5+. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 8/10.

Overall Condition: The rifle retains 99% of its metal finish. The exterior of the rifle shows only a few minor scattered marks/handling wear. The top of the barrel has a few small nicks. The action is smooth, the markings are clear and the screw heads are sharp. Overall this rifle is in about Very Good+ to Excellent condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We have not fired this rifle. As with all previously owned firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This rifle includes the manual, certificate of authenticity from the CMP and a sight cover.

Our Assessment: This Winchester M1 Garand, produced in October 1942, is a classic early-war example from one of the rarer manufacturers. Winchester Repeating Arms was one of only two original wartime contractors (alongside Springfield Armory) and produced M1 Garands under government contract from 1941 to 1945. These rifles are especially collectible due to their lower production numbers and distinctive features, including unique Winchester-marked parts. The Springfield barrel dated January 1944 indicates it was likely replaced during a wartime or postwar rebuild a common practice for rifles that saw extended service.

The rifle has been refinished and includes some replacement parts, likely during an arsenal or CMP overhaul, which was standard for rifles reissued or stored for future use. The “B.A.” marking on the stock may indicate a postwar inspection or rebuild mark, possibly from Benicia Arsenal, which was one of several U.S. arsenals involved in refurbishment. Sold by the Civilian Marksmanship Program in 2009, this Garand is a documented piece of American military history. While not in its original wartime configuration, it represents the long and evolving service life typical of M1 Garands, firearms that often spanned multiple conflicts and rebuild cycles.
