Bore Condition: The bore is dark and heavily frosted with worn but defined rifling. There is light to modest erosion throughout. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 5/10.
Overall Condition: This revolver retains about 10% of its original finish in protected areas. The exposed steel surfaces have aged to a smooth, dark gray and brown patina. There is scattered light pitting, erosion, and finish wear throughout, particularly on the cylinder and barrel flats. The brass trigger guard shows attractive mellow aging with darkened patina and handling marks. The screw heads show light tool wear and remain serviceable. All markings are legible. Overall, this revolver rates in about Good condition as an antique.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The hammer locks back and the cylinder indexes properly, though timing may benefit from inspection due to age. The loading lever locks into place and articulates as intended. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.
Our Assessment: The Remington New Model Army was one of the most widely issued revolvers to Union troops during the American Civil War, second only to the Colt 1860 Army. Valued for its strength, durability, and easy cylinder removal, the Remington quickly earned a reputation on and off the battlefield. This particular revolver is a representative example with military inspector marks, a matching serial number on the barrel, and honest aged patina throughout.
This revolver shows its age proudly, bearing the marks of time and service while retaining solid mechanical function. While the finish has largely faded and the bore is worn, it stands as a true piece of American history—ideal for display in any Civil War or 19th-century arms collection.
Collectors of Civil War arms, antique black powder revolvers, or those who value historical preservation will find this piece a desirable addition to their display. With its martial inspector stamps and classic lines, this Remington New Model Army still speaks of cavalry campaigns and campfires past. Please see our photos and good luck on your bid! – L.S.
