Our Assessment: The Remington Model 40-X was built to be a match-grade rifle right from the factory, and this example in 7.62 NATO/.308 Winchester exemplifies the purpose-built precision that defined Remington’s custom shop in the late 1950s and 1960s. With its 27” heavy barrel, hand-fitted action, and target-stocked walnut furniture, this rifle was designed to meet the demanding needs of military marksmen, benchrest competitors, and law enforcement snipers. The inlaid accessory rail, drilled and tapped receiver, and precisely chambered bore all speak to its high-performance pedigree. The 40-X line established Remington’s reputation in the realm of factory precision rifles and is still considered a benchmark even decades later.
This rifle retains about 95% of its original metal finish with light wear consistent with careful use. The bore is exceptionally clean with sharp rifling, and the stock—though showing honest handling marks—remains solid and serviceable. The minor alterations, like the bolt cutout at the comb and the broken optic screw, do little to detract from this rifle’s mechanical integrity or value to a shooter. Whether you’re a serious precision shooter, collector of vintage target rifles, or a fan of Cold War-era firearms, this 40-X offers both performance and collectibility in a highly respected platform.
