Bore Condition: The bore is bright with strong rifling. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 9/10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains beautiful aged character with patina on the barrel and aged, even toning on the engraved fittings. The gold bands at the breech remain intact and striking. The screw heads are in fine shape, with only light tool marks visible on a few. The engraving remains crisp throughout. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good condition for a high-end antique stalking piece.

Mechanics: The break action locks up tight, and the adjustable double set triggers operate correctly, with a light release when set. The external hammer cocks and drops with strength. The top lever functions smoothly. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Our Assessment: Built in the 1870s by Michael Adam Joseph Saam of Frankfurt am Main, this stalking rifle is a superb example of precision German sporting arms from the black powder era. Rifles of this type were carried by Continental hunters on foot or horseback in pursuit of roe deer, boar, and chamois, where accuracy, portability, and elegance mattered in equal measure.

This rifle has it all: beautiful engraving, dual gold bands, set triggers, horn grip extension, fine checkering, and excellent wood with a flowing cheekpiece. It reflects not only the high level of artistry typical of Frankfurt gunmaking in the period, but also the functional demands of the serious hunter.

Collectors of European single-shot rifles, black powder cartridge rifles, or finely made antique firearms will find this rifle a truly exceptional example, worthy of display, careful preservation, or continued use in the field. So bid high and bid firm. I highly encourage you to take a look at the condition of the item in our high-quality photos. Good luck with your bid. -K.F.
