Our Assessment: This FN Hi-Power Mk. III chambered in .40 S&W is a scarce and highly collectible modern evolution of one of the most iconic handguns of the 20th century. Manufactured by FN Herstal in Belgium and assembled in Portugal, this 2002 production example represents one of the final iterations of the legendary Browning Hi-Power before its discontinuation. The .40 S&W variant was specifically built with reinforced slide and frame components to handle the increased pressure of the caliber—making it notably more robust than its 9mm counterparts and one of the few factory Hi-Power models ever chambered in .40 S&W. This particular pistol is in outstanding condition, retaining approximately 99% of its original deep blued finish. The bore is pristine, bright, and sharp with no visible erosion—rating a 10/10 and likely unfired beyond factory testing. All serialized parts match, and the pistol features attractive two-piece checkered walnut grips in like-new condition. Mechanically, the action functions smoothly, with a crisp trigger and properly operating safety and magazine disconnect. The set includes four factory 10-round magazines—all in excellent condition—along with the original FN hard case and paperwork.
For collectors, FN and Browning enthusiasts, or anyone who appreciates the craftsmanship and heritage of the Hi-Power line, this .40 S&W Mk. III is a gem. Its low production numbers, powerful caliber, and near-pristine condition make it an outstanding addition to any collection and a standout piece in the history of high-performance military and civilian handguns. Whether you’re preserving it as a collectible or enjoying it as a shooter, this Hi-Power exemplifies the legacy of FN’s craftsmanship and the enduring appeal of John Browning’s masterpiece. -R.E.
