Our Assessment: The Colt Diamondback in .22 Long Rifle is one of the most desirable rimfire revolvers ever produced, offering premium Colt craftsmanship in a sleek and accurate package. Manufactured in 1985, this example features a 4-inch barrel with a ventilated rib and full underlug, giving it both visual appeal and a balanced feel in the hand. Based on Colt’s D-frame, the Diamondback combines the elegant lines and refined action of Colt’s centerfire revolvers with the low-recoil performance of .22 LR, making it ideal for target shooting, training, and collecting. This revolver retains about 98% of its original Royal Blue finish, showing only minor operational wear, a faint cylinder turn line, and small scattered handling marks. The barrel has taken on a slightly gray hue, common with long-term storage or exposure to cleaning products, but remains smooth and well-preserved. The bore is excellent, bright with sharp rifling and no erosion, rating a 9.5 out of 10. The rubber Colt medallion grips are in very good condition with light wear and provide a solid, comfortable grip that complements the revolver’s shooting characteristics.
As one of the final production years before the model was discontinued, this 1985 Colt Diamondback .22 is both a collector’s prize and a capable shooter. With its exceptional condition, outstanding bore, and original finish, it’s a standout example of Colt’s high-grade revolvers. Whether added to a serious Colt collection or used as a precision rimfire revolver, this Diamondback offers timeless design, superb build quality, and lasting value. -R.E.
