Our Assessment: The Winchester Model 1887 was John Browning’s first repeating shotgun design and stands as one of the earliest successful lever-action shotguns in American firearms history. Produced by Winchester Repeating Arms, this model combined the lever-action system familiar to rifle shooters with the burgeoning popularity of shotgun use in the late 19th century. With this example dating to 1896, it qualifies as an antique and represents a significant piece of the evolution of American sporting and defensive arms.

This example features a 30” cut barrel and retains approximately 65% of its original finish, with honest wear consistent with its 19th-century origins. The bore remains in solid shape with some light erosion and pitting, while the stock displays expected signs of handling, including a small crack in the forend. Nonetheless, its mechanical integrity remains intact, and the markings are all legible. This Winchester 1887 would be an excellent addition to any antique collection, particularly for those interested in the intersection of innovation and tradition in the early days of repeating shotguns.

Collectors and enthusiasts alike will appreciate this Model 1887 not only for its mechanical novelty but also for its connection to Winchester’s golden era and John Browning’s legacy. Whether displayed as a conversation piece or preserved as a historical artifact, it captures the spirit of a transitional moment in firearms development.
