Markings: The left side of the barrel is marked “TROOPER MK III / * .357 MAGNUM CTG. *”. The right side of the barrel is marked “COLT’S MFG. CO. HARTFORD, CONN. U.S.A.” The left side of the frame features the Rampant Colt logo. The crane and crane cut are marked with the serial number “85813J”. Additional inspector marks are present under the grips and on internal surfaces.

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a ramped blade with white paint applied, integral to a ventilated rib. The rear sight is a square-notch in a fully adjustable leaf.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The grips are two-piece checkered walnut with gold Colt medallions. There are only minor handling marks with sharp checkering and no chips or cracks. Overall, the grips are in Excellent condition.

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is light fouling. There is no erosion. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 9.5/10.

Overall Condition: This revolver retains about 98% of its original blued finish. There is a light, superficial turn line on the cylinder that does not break the finish. A small amount of white paint has been applied to the front sight, likely for improved visibility. Edge wear is minimal. The screw heads are sharp, and all markings are clear. Overall, this revolver is in Excellent condition in the writer’s opinion.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The lock-up is tight with minimal cylinder play. Timing is spot on, and the trigger pull is smooth in double action with a crisp single-action break. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: Included is the original Colt woodgrain box with matching serial number on the label, original Colt paperwork, and a Colt-branded screwdriver. The box shows light wear but remains in Very Good condition overall.

Our Assessment: The Colt Trooper MK III was introduced in 1969 as a more robust and cost-effective alternative to the Python, featuring Colt’s new transfer bar safety system and a heavier-duty internal design. This 4″ model chambered in .357 Magnum showcases Colt’s high-polish blued finish and exceptional build quality. Manufactured in 1975, it stands out with 98% finish remaining, an exceptionally sharp bore, and factory box and accessories included.
