Markings: The left side of the receiver is marked “Weatherby / South Gate Calif”. The left side of the barrel is marked “.300 WBY. MAGNUM”. The bottom of the bolt handle is marked “396”.

Sights / Optics: There are no provisions iron sights. The receiver is drilled and tapped for mounting an optic.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is a Monte Carlo checkered walnut stock with a raised cheekpiece, rosewood grip cap with spacer, and a rosewood forend tip with spacer. The LOP measures 13 3/4” from the front of the trigger to the back of the Weatherby ventilated brown rubber recoil pad. There are light compressions and minor draglines scattered throughout, but no cracks or chips. The checkering is strong and well-defined. The stock rates in about Very Good to Fine overall condition.
Magazine Quantity & Condition: The rifle has a 5-round internal magazine with a hinged floorplate.

Bore Condition: The bore is mostly-bright, the rifling is mostly-sharp. There is light visible erosion in the bore. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 9/10.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 93% of its metal finish. The balance of the finish shows thinning along the sharp edges, light rubs on the barrel, and minor freckling on the bolt handle. There is some wear around the ejection port and bolt raceways. The screw heads are sharp. The pins are clean. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

This early Weatherby Mark V in .300 Weatherby Magnum is a classic example from the brand’s golden era, manufactured during the 1960s under contract by J.P. Sauer & Sohn in West Germany. While this particular rifle is not explicitly marked “Made in Germany,” its serial number and “South Gate, Calif” receiver marking confirm it as one of the highly regarded German-produced Mark Vs.
Known for their incredibly strong design and smooth cycling, these early Mark Vs are ideal for powerful magnum cartridges like the .300 Weatherby Magnum. This round remains one of the most respected flat-shooting cartridges for long-range hunting of big game in open country.
