Stock Configuration & Condition:  The stock is a one-piece walnut military stock with a straight wrist, straight comb, grasping grooves, and a smooth steel buttplate with a trapdoor. There is a handguard. The wood shows light-to-moderate handling marks consistent with age, including small dings and shallow pressure marks, but no cracks or structural issues. The cartouches on the left side of the wrist are faint but visible, including the boxed “IJA” inspector mark and “1899” date.

Type of Finish: Blued

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bore is mostly bright, the rifling is sharp. There is some light frosting and fouling in the grooves but no visible pitting or erosion. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 8.5/10.

Overall Condition:  The metal retains 40% of its original blued finish with some thinning at the edges and high points, as well as patina and oxidation on the barrel and receiver. The bolt shows typical toning from use. Overall this rifle is in Very Good condition.

Mechanics:  The action functions correctly. The bolt cycles smoothly, the safety engages properly, and the magazine cutoff is functional. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories:  None

Our Assessment:  This is a solid example of a Springfield Model 1898 Krag rifle, the final and most refined version of the U.S. military’s first smokeless-powder repeating rifle. Produced in 1899, this rifle falls into the late-period of Krag production, offering refinements like the improved rear sight and reinforced receiver. It remains in original, unaltered military configuration—an increasingly rare trait given the number of Krags sporterized over the past century.

The metal retains a very good amount of original blued finish, and the stock, while showing typical wear, still displays legible cartouches and inspection markings. The rifle appears to be all-original with no signs of rework or restoration, making it an especially desirable piece for collectors of U.S. military arms. It would make a fine addition to any Krag collection or turn-of-the-century American arms display.

For the shooter or enthusiast, the Krag is known for its silky-smooth action and outstanding accuracy. This example has a very strong bore and is mechanically sound, making it both collectible and functional. Whether for historical appreciation or vintage shooting enjoyment, this 1898 Springfield Krag is a fine survivor of American arms development.  Please see our High Quality photos and good luck on your bids.-C.M.
