Our Assessment: The FN Hi-Power Practical Mk. III in .40 S&W is a rare and desirable variant of the legendary Browning Hi-Power platform. Manufactured by FN Herstal in Belgium and assembled in Portugal, the Practical model was introduced to offer a more modernized, competition- and defense-oriented version of the classic single-action pistol. Chambered in .40 S&W, this model was built with a beefier slide and frame to handle the higher pressures of the round, making it one of the few Hi-Power variants not chambered in 9mm. The two-tone finish (matte black slide with a chrome or silver-colored frame) and wraparound rubber grips provide both durability and enhanced control. This 1995 example is in excellent condition, retaining about 99% of its original finish with only faint handling and storage marks. The bore is pristine—bright with sharp rifling and no erosion—rating a perfect 10/10. All serialized parts match, and the pistol includes two 10-round magazines, both equipped with ejector tabs. The action functions correctly, with a smooth slide and crisp single-action trigger. It includes the original hard case and factory paperwork, rounding out a highly collectible and functional package.
For collectors of Hi-Power variants or shooters looking for a more powerful, refined version of a classic, this FN Hi-Power Practical in .40 S&W is a standout. It’s ideal for defensive use, range shooting, or as a highlight in any Browning or FN collection. With its limited production and excellent condition, this pistol is both a practical shooter and a valuable collectible. -R.E.
