Our Assessment: This large-bore flintlock musket is believed to date from the late 17th to early 18th century, the period when the flintlock replaced the matchlock as the standard military ignition across Europe. Its roughly .78 caliber smoothbore, 40″ barrel and full-length walnut stock with brass and iron furniture reflect the heavy infantry and fowling arms of that era.
The gun retains about 35% of its browned finish and the lock holds at full and half cock. The bore is dark and rates 4 out of 10, and the stock has chips and cracks on the buttstock and at the upper tang. It is an early flintlock long arm with plenty of character for the collector of early military and colonial-era firearms. -N.P
